The winners of Furnitur International Furniture Design Competition, which was organized by Istikbal Furniture Company and Turkey Design Council second times in this year, explained how they answered "Where / How Will We Work In 2030?" question.
Competition invites designers, architects, engineers, and anyone with the motivation to create designs that can meet the needs of the new world. This year designers were challenged into designing functional and sustainable objects with innovative approaches, developing home-office furniture design ideas for the new generation living and working spaces by answering the question "Where and how will we work in 2030?".
Furnitur International Furniture Design Competition winners were announced on January 20, 2021 following the jury meeting held on 16-17 January 2021. The designers of the awarded project explained their projects in detail.
Award Winning Projects
First Prize: FOLDER Project with 71863 code - Fatih Koçoğlu, Interior Architect and Product Designer
How is a desk useful when you are not working on it?
Folder is a product that has emerged in the future scenario by focusing on the issue of using narrow and valuable areas more effectively and alternately. With the foldable ears of the Folder, it is possible to work more focused and to listen to music by adjusting the direction of the sound when desired. The purpose of being a focal point for other activities besides working is fulfilled in this product. Apart from the folding table on the folder, there is also a foldable lighting element. The product turns into a multimedia device by folding and closing outside of working hours. In this case, information such as the user's social media accounts, mail accounts, and the weather forecast is shared on the embedded screen.
Second Prize: ON Table project with 95564 code - Gamze Çaparoğlu Kaysı, Interior Architect
ON Table is a furniture that aims to meet different needs in living spaces.
The aim of the project is to combine multiple functions such as the dining table, worktable, socializing area in a single unit. The design resembling under a tree creates a sense of workspace for users. In homes without a study room, this action is usually done on the dining table. This creates problems in terms of both hygiene, wiring, and aesthetics. In addition, while working at the dining table, the problem of focusing occurs. When ON Table is brought to the working table position, the user feels ready to work. With ON Table, 6 people can work and meet at the same time.
Third Prize: NOMI project with 01429 code - Ahmet Kapıcıoğlu, Interior Architect
"Your workspace is where you are!"
The introduction of the concept of working from home with the social distance measures that emerged after Covid-19 has revealed a fundamental problem such as the limitation of our movement areas. In this case, the need for products that are mobile, can be installed and removed in a practical way, do not take up much space, and have easily cleanable surfaces has increased. In line with these needs, NOMI (NOMadic Intelligent) has been designed with the aim of creating an independent and mobile workspace. In the sketching process, an answer was sought to the question of how a portable workspace adapted to human ergonomics, based on the practical solutions provided by mobile furniture designs.
First Honorable Mention: FOCUS Chair project with 80706 code - Mert Urhan, Industrial Designer
Focus chair is a work chair design that increases the perception of private space by isolating the user from the stimuli in the home environment and thus creates a more focused working environment.
The manually managed focus panel can be lowered when not in use, making the product compatible with the home environment. The ergonomic working stand of the product can be positioned at a suitable distance to the person. In addition, it creates a plain background for video conversations that have taken an indispensable place in the lives of businesspeople, especially in the last year. The focus panel has storage compartments on the inside surface. Work tools can be stored in the storage area under the stand and accessible from above by pulling the stand forward.
Second Honorable Mention: Modo project with 10904 code - Ümit Karaca, Product and UX Designer, İsmail Köse, Designer, Ozan Tan, Designer
Modo is a desk that adapts to the changes in our needs.
It consists of modules such as cup holder, flowerpot, pen holder, mobile phone platform, cable organizer, lighting, storage solutions in various volumes, document holder, headphone hanger, main work platform. All parts can be easily mounted and dismounted and moved around on the platform. The material and colour of the modules are optional. With these features, Modo becomes a special product for you, as well as a product that is compatible with its location and time. Modo, while adapting to space and time, also uses the led lamp on the back. This lighting unit with RGB LED feature can rotate around its own axis so that we can adjust both the intensity and the direction of the light, and we can make it more compatible with space by playing with the colours of the light.
Third Honorable Mention: The World in a Tent project with 08152 code - Ekin Cunbul, Product Designer
The World in a Tent is designed to anticipate the further spread of the tradition of working from home, which was adapted with the COVID-19 pandemic, and new working styles.
As anticipated by experts as well, the possibility of continuing with these alternative ways of education and employment even after the pandemic is rather high. No matter how peaceful the home environment may seem from a distance, many people often get bored of working in the same environment at home and sometimes the home is not the ideal environment to work and can cause concentration problems. This product, which can be easily stored at homes thanks to its foldable system, has a system that can be easily transported with its wheeled system and can provide the office environment to the user again in many places such as the beach, forest, regardless of the weather conditions.
Turkey Design Council Encouragement Award: Lagom project with 59919 code - Hüseyin Aydın, Industrial Product Designer, İrem Nur Demir, Industrial Product Designer, Baran Furkan Baydeniz, Industrial Product Designer
Lagom is a mobile and compact workspace design suitable for business practices and new generation working styles.
The remote working projected in the future has increased along with the pandemic. The working activities have been associated with the framework of home, office, and collective working places. It has been inferred that variable working practices will evolve independently of the space. Hence, it has been assumed that there will be requirements for products that can define new areas and adapt quickly to the process. Lagom provides solutions to physical problems (light, sound, storage and focus) arising from the location, depending on the way they do business remotely in the future. The general dimensions of the product have been standardized considering the shrinking living spaces and anthropometric data. Lagom gives the flexibility of use by positioning it according to the physical conditions of different places.
Istikbal Design Award: Teams project with 20826 code - İlker Toruk, Industrial Product Designer
Teams is designed to adapt to the possible lifestyle in the shrinking living spaces in the future modern life scenario.
A multi-functional usage scenario in the future will be a need rather than envisaged. At this point, the product, which offers modular and flexible personalization with its 'Smart Frame' feature, offers flexible usage with its fixed-positioned table, electrification points and panels. Objects that are clamped with the fixing device placed in the 'Smart Frame' move easily without restriction. Again, for disabled individuals and users who want to use the way of lying down, the product has the features of creating a comfortable area by combining and using it as multiple sitting units.
